‘Begin Transmission’, while being the title of the exhibition, is more importantly the conceptual basis from which this duo of artists have begun their collaborative endeavors. While working in different media as well as content, a common ground between the two is being traveled, each piece a call and answer of sorts, a commonality found in the theme of communication, in all its forms. The looming, distorted forms on view are the recent work of Chris Marshall, a Brooklyn based sculptor. Utilizing a range of media, his work wrestles with the themes of masculinity and domestic normalcy. The other half of the gallery is occupied by Tim Okamura, whose paintings depict the struggle for individuality in the urban environment. The two artists cross-pollinate in the middle of the space, where they have created a series of pieces dealing with the theme of communication. A broad theme such as this allows for a great deal of flexibility and experimentation, as each artist has chosen to take a creative detour in each work, and allow the other to inform and expound upon the other’s creative actions.
